LIDAR- / Laser-Scanning
Lidar- / Laser-Technologies allow to capture information about the physical world, manipulate and analyze that information digitally, and merge back the result into the physical world - this enables new ways of working.
LIDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) to the Earth. These light pulses—combined with other data recorded — generate precise, three-dimensional information (each having x, y and z positions relative to a chosen coordinate system) about the shape of the Earth and its surface characteristics.
Image Based Modeling has been around for a while, and as a clever secret for many 3D artists – this was the darling of photreal 3D renders. Photogrammetry is a complex science that has it‘s limitation but overall can be overwhelming when deeply investigated.
For both objects and actors that need to be created or enhanced with visual effects, cyberscanning offers a quick solution to gathering a 3D volume of their shape.

The Photoscan-system is a perfect solution for creating ultra realistic base models with blend shapes for characters – humans and fantasy. The raw scan data speeds up the process of creating high realistic 3D models a lot. For reference, creating a 3D model with that level of detail and quality from scratch would take an experienced artist an entire month or two.
Hard to tell 3D models from reality
The output of a photogrammetry-project is a high resolution 3D model and a color (diffuse-texture-) map, We then generate optimized mesh and so called utility maps by reprojecting all the details to the retopoed geometry.
